How to pick it so it keeps feeding you
Pinch from the top, just above a pair of leaves, and the plant branches into two where you cut. That's why a well-picked herb gets bushier all season while a neglected one goes leggy and flowers. Never strip more than a third at once. The moment you see flower buds, pinch them off — flowering tells the plant its job is done and the leaves turn harsh. First picking lands around day 90 from sowing; after that it's a rhythm, not a single event.
The three ways this usually dies
- Not enough light. Rosemary needs about 6 hours of direct sun. Under that it doesn't die dramatically — it goes pale, stretches towards the window and just never amounts to anything. If your spot is short, move it rather than feeding it; fertiliser cannot replace light.
